Shot blasting is for surface cleaning of heat-treated parts like Gears, Machined components, Engine valves, Transmission parts etc.

How it works
  1. The abrasive is accelerated through a throwing wheel that spins inside a steel housing
  2. The process is usually carried out in a blast room or blast cabinet.
  3. The shot blasting machine has several parts, including a blast wheel, cabinet, work handling mechanism, elevator, separator, and dust collector.
Benefits

It provides two major benefits which are as follows:

  • It helps to remove all rust, mill scale, and corrosion, thus eliminating moisture which is entrapped beneath these corrosion products.
  • It also provides an ideal surface finish for securing a continuous and effective bond between the steel surfaces.
  • Typical Material used

  • Steel shot
  • A common choice for shot blasting because it's hard, durable, and inexpensive. It's effective at removing rust, paint, and other contaminants from metal surfaces.

  • Aluminum oxide
  • A synthetic abrasive that's often used for non-metal surfaces like concrete or stone. It's effective at removing contaminants and preparing surfaces for coating or painting.

  • Glass beads and olivine
  • Commonly used for polishing surfaces like glass, rubber, metal, and plastic.

  • Garnet and chilled iron
  • These materials are very coarse and abrasive, so they shouldn't be used on soft materials.

    Other materials used for shot blasting include:

    Stainless steel cut wire shot, Lead shot, Zinc shot, Coal slag, Plastics, Walnut shells, Ceramic micro powder, Steel sand, Corn cob, and Resin sand.

Applications

Shot blasting is a surface treatment process that has many applications in heat treatment, including:

  • Removing oxidation

Shot blasting can remove surface oxidation that forms during heat treatment operations such as annealing, hardening, normalizing, or tempering.

  • Improving surface finish

Shot blasting can be used to improve the surface finish of castings after heat treatment.

  • Preparing for further processing

Shot blasting can prepare a surface for further processing, such as welding or coloring.

  • Altering mechanical properties

Shot blasting can alter the mechanical properties of components, such as increasing resistance to fatigue for springs and gears.
