Stress Relieving

This process is employed to relieve stresses formed by manufacturing process like Machining, Straightning etc.

Stress Relieving - is employed to relieve stress prior to heat treatment OR post a stress inducing operation such as quenching, fabrication, machining etc. It does not alter the microstructure but only the stress parameters.

How it Works

When stressed metal is heated to sub critical temperature the stresses within are relieved there by allowing for dimentional stability.

Benefits

By relieving stresses early the chances of deformation/Crack are greatly reduced. There by allowing for lower risk of component failure & better life.
Typical material used.
1.Heavily machined parts.
2.Fabricated parts.
3.Die steel parts.
4.Highly alloyed steels.

Range

Any steel including Mild steel.

Typical Materials used

Stress relieving is a heat treatment process that can be used on a variety of materials, including:

  • Ferrous metals

Steel and other ferrous metals can be stress relieved at temperatures ranging from 540–700°C.

  • Non-ferrous metals

Aluminum, copper, and other non-ferrous metals can also be stress relieved.

  • Alloy steels

Carbon and alloy steels can be stress relieved at different temperatures depending on the desired outcome. For example, a temperature of 150–200°C can relieve peak stress without significantly reducing hardness, while a temperature of 600– 680°C can provide complete stress relief.

  • Stainless steel

Stainless steel springs can be stress relieved at similar temperatures to steel springs, while still preserving their corrosionresistant properties.

Applications

Fabricated Structures
Dies
Heat Treated Parts
